STRANGER THAN FICTION movie review

STRANGER THAN FICTION

I knew in advance that I would love this movie. The trailer was detailed enough to share the plot and tone, and it stars some of my favorite performers. I mean, seriously who can resist Will Ferrell or Emma Thompson? Or Dustin Hoffman for that matter?

It’s witty and charming. Not laugh-out-loud funny to the extent WF’s other movies are, but it had some hilarious moments and great one liners. And it showcased the fact that he is absolutely the most loveable person in show biz. Lord, I hope he’s half as genuine as he seems.

Do you need to see it on the big screen? Not really. I probably would have waited for DVD, but I’m hooked on WF right now for some reason. We were actually headed out to see The Prestige, but at the last minute, changed our minds and I’m glad we did. But now I’m worried I won’t get to see The Prestige in the theater, and that one, I suspect, really needs to be viewed that way.

So thumbs up for STRANGER THAN FICTION, even though it did have one tiny problem – the ending. I didn’t love it the way I loved the rest of the movie. When you see it, you’ll see why that is kind of an inside joke. But don’t get me wrong. I liked the result the ending reached, I just thought they’d handle it more deftly. Minor quibble. Not worth mentioning, but I thought I should anyway, because if it had ended as sharply as it unfolded, I would be raving about it right now.

What a great week for me, entertainment wise. TV was the best it has been in a while. Even DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES had a fantastic episode – simply terrific. HOW I MET YOUR MOTHER was adorable and funny; JERICHO was good; STUDIO 60 had its best episode yet, thank heavens. I even liked LOST. But I can’t stand THE NINE or UGLY BETTY any more. I kept trying to like them, but they’re just not for me.

Ironically, the show that’s been my favorite this year had a bad episode last week and a frustrating one this week. Frustrating because they came up with a great plot, then underplayed it into the ground, which they do a lot. I’m talking about BATTLESTAR G, and they are so uneven.

That’s it for now! I’ll be back with a short report on my un-choose-your-own-adventure tomorrow. I’ve been having a blast writing it.

BTYL,
Kate
