The WOLFMAN = not very good

(It's been a while since I did a movie review. Too bad it has to be this one.)

It pains me to give this one thumbs-down, because we went on opening day, expecting The Wolfman to be at least “pretty good.” I mean, Anthony Hopkins and Benicio? And the previews had a nice, gothic-y feel.

So what went wrong? Pretty much everything. The pacing was off, the acting was dreadful, the characters were stereotypes – in fact, even the scenery/setting was stereotyped!  So we had a gypsy camp with cardboard gypsies; a dark manor house with brooding males; a sprinkling of mysterious foreigners; a sadistic doctor running an asylum; a fire-and-brimstone comic book priest; a mob of stupid, angry villagers with torches….

I've never been a huge fan of werewolf stories. They figure somewhere between vampires and Frankenstein-monsters for me. Vampires being terrifying/sexy; monsters being dumb. And wolfmen being a little too simplistic. But from the trailer – and the casting – I thought this one might have found a way to enrich the myth, make it a little more complex.

Instead, it made it dull(er), and gave me the very rare experience of sitting in the theater and feeling completely disconnected. Usually, I’m engaged on some level, even if the film is awful.

Anyway, if you go, bring a flashlight and a book.

p.s. On the bright side, we finally went to the movies again! It's been forever -- I blame HBO.
