TAMALES in February, who knew?

Yay, we finally made our Christmas tamales yesterday!  Do you sense a hint of desperation in my "yay"? Hmmm...

Every autumn, I make an ambitious plans for a tamale-making party around December 19th -- a date that works for a zillion reasons, plus it's my goddaughter's birthday so it's lucky, right? Unfortunately, we never make it before Christmas. Too much last-minute everything, i.e. the easy stuff like sugar cookies and  jigsaw puzzles.

The back up plan is always New Years Day -- what could be better, right? Or at the latest, 'sometime' in January. If we don't make any of those backup dates, it's over for that year. And trust me, that's a tragedy.

I actually vowed -- VOWED -- not to let it go this year. So there we were, buying masa on February 17th and making tamales on the 18th. Plus I wasn't feeling well because I had spent the previous week in front of the computer for 14 hours a day, obsessed with a sci-fi story I was writing. Result=bad neck.

But we powered through. No party,of course. That would be silly. Just my husband and my son -- a.k.a my heroes -- and I, since our daughter (a warrior goddess when it comes to spreading confidence, joy, and most importantly, masa on leaves) had to work.  Instead of 200+ tamales, or even 135  (a sinfully small batch and our smallest until now), we made 75, but as God is our witness, we made them. And all we can say is...

Yum. Yum, yum, yum. What a Christmas miracle.

I can't believe we almost let ourselves off the hook. On the other hand, it was sooo much work for so few tamales, we can only hope that I will get it together next year.

Plus, we hope you ate well this weekend too!

P.S. It's bizarre how much tamale-making resembles fiction-writing. The hard work, the euphoria, the second-guessing (is it really worth it? does anyone really care? isn't store bought just as good? what if you burn them?!!), and then, just when you're about to throw in the towel, the triumphant: yay! It honestly and truly doesn't get any better than this, right?

Store bought tamales? I rely on my friends and customers during the Holidays for my tamales. I have even gone to CostCo when desperate. They're not the same but I make do.

Now I want some.

I'm so spoiled, I haven't had store-bought ones in years. I heard Trader Joe's has good ones. And you're saying CostCo's are okay too? But I guess you have to buy a bunch at one time there?

I'm kind of glad we can't find great ones too easily. How would we resist buying/eating too many?

Penni! Nice to see you! Are you still hosting over at HQ? I haven't been there in quiet a while
