DA VINCI CODE the movie

I’ve been dying to blog lately, but real life has been getting in the way. Now it’s less than 48 hours before the end of the May contest and the beginning of a new one – with new questions – for June. So I’ll be posting the winner and the new questions June 1.

But meanwhile, we went to see the Da Vinci Code. Given the lackluster reviews, we weren’t expecting much, and so…

Actually, not bad at all. Very faithful to the book, both in terms of strengths and weaknesses. My biggest gripe was that it didn’t add the kind of dimension that great films can add to already-hit books. The way Jaws did, for example. Or Godfather.

I’ve mentioned before that I’m not a Tom Hanks fan (he lost me at Castaway) but he did a really good job here. I liked his Robert Langdon much better than the one in the book – less pomposity, less false modesty (i.e. underground bragging).

Did the book have a hint of romance? Just a hint? Or did I imagine that – which wouldn’t surprise me at all. Anyway, the movie didn’t even have a hint. There was more sexual tension between the crazy bad guy and his whip, for crying out loud (I’m kidding!!! I swear)

Anyway, if you liked the book, you’ll like the movie. I guess my reaction can be summed up as: I was entertained. And relieved that it wasn’t awful. And a little disappointed that it wasn’t transcendent.

See you on July First with good news!!

Good to know!
Good to know the movie isn't crap! I'm actually dying to see X3 so when hubby and I have a free moment this weekend and we can get a babysitter, I think we'll sneak into our nearest multiplex for a visit with Prof. Xavier and Magneto.

You know, I'm not one for older men, but a Patrick Stewart-Ian McKellen sandwich? Hmmmm... ;-)

Re: Good to know!
I'm jealous. Every time my husband and I go to X-men movies, I sit there with my gaze glued to the screen, loving it, and my husband dozes off. Can you believe it? I'm not sure what that's all about, although I have to confess, Hugh Jackman is half of the story to me, so maybe I'm not being as quality-conscious as I think.

Anyway, let me know how it is. Maybe I'll slip him a no-doze and drag him over to the theaters this weekend.
