a contrary opinion

All of the reviews I read -- including some amateur reviewers I trust implicitly -- sang the praises of DISTRICT NINE. So I'm just popping in to say I hated it. Hay-ted it. A lot.

Now it's possible my expectations were too high, but honestly! So many reviewers considered it intelligent, ground breaking SF that explored important themes.

I'm pretty sure Star Trek explored the same themes decades ago. As did ALIEN NATION and et cetera. And seriously, I'm not a fan of gross. Not in my SF, nor in my horror. But at least in horror, I have a higher tolerance for "horr-ible"

Maybe if the reviews had called it "campy tripe with some truly good moments"....

Also, I'm usually a fan of recurring jokes -- they often get funnier -- I had the opposite experience with the cat food joke. Funny once -- marginally. Thereafter? Nonsense, and not the good kind.

Meanwhile, I waited for DEFIANCE until the DVD came out b/c I had heard someone on NPR rag on it a bit. Guess what? I thought it was so good. So very, very good.

Here's my new plan. I'll use rottentomatoes.com, but I'll wait a few weeks until the initial uproar goes away. In the first weeks, it had DISTRICT NINE at 98%. Now it's still high -- 88 -- but at least there are opposing positions. Same for DEFIANCE but in reverse.

Can you tell I'm cranky? But the Legislative session ends next week, so hopefully, I'll get happy again. Also, we have a vacation coming up, and I'm working on a new story, so there's hope!!

p.s. The cat's still big. He says "meow" to Penni!

Did you think the cat was going to shrink?
;) He won't! Tell him I say, "Right back atcha!"

You're so funny! I didn't think he'd shrink, but b/c I had it in my head that he was going to be a tiny cat, I'm still shocked when I come around a corner and unexpectedly see him. If this guy stretches out in front of a doorway, he blocks the entire path! He's a doll, though, and very playful. Now let's just hope he understands his winter duties, i.e. rodent patrol.
